How an insurance claim is arranged, and the help his clinic gives
-
Check your benefits
Confirm your benefits with your insurer, and ask whether approval is needed before treatment.
-
Consultation and scan
Dr Ooi examines you. The first consultation is quoted when you write in, and a duplex scan of one leg is SGD 599.50 with GST (SGD 550 before GST). The scan report is often needed to support a claim for varicose vein treatment.
-
Documents and the deposit letter
The clinic can usually help prepare the documents your insurer asks for, and can help you ask your insurer for a letter that waives the hospital deposit. This letter is called a Letter of Guarantee.
The letter does not mean your insurer has approved the claim.
Depending on your insurer and policy, the documents may include these.
Insurers are more likely to cover varicose vein treatment that is medically necessary rather than cosmetic, for example when veins cause aching, ankle swelling, skin changes, bleeding or a leg ulcer.
- Your medical history and symptoms
- Your examination findings
- Your duplex ultrasound results
- The recommended treatment plan
- A medical report or referral letter
- A request for approval before treatment (pre-authorisation), where needed
MediSave and Integrated Shield Plans for varicose vein day surgery
For varicose vein day surgery that is medically indicated, MediSave may help, and an Integrated Shield Plan may also cover it, subject to your plan and panel.
Whether a procedure can be claimed under MediSave depends on the procedure, the reason for it and the Ministry of Health's current rules, and his clinic can tell you whether yours can be claimed.
For other conditions, please ask at your consultation whether your plan applies.
What to bring, and what to check with your insurer before your first visit
Bring to your first visit
- A referral letter, if you have one; you do not need one to see Dr Ooi
- Any earlier scans or medical reports
- Your insurance or MediSave details, if you plan to use them
Check with your insurer
- Your benefits under your policy
- Whether approval is needed before treatment
- Whether your policy needs a doctor on its panel, or a certain hospital
- What you may need to pay yourself
Ask the clinic
- Whether MediSave can be used for your planned procedure

If your insurer or insurance panel is not listed, his clinic can still guide your claim
Message the clinic with the name of your insurer or plan, and the team can guide you in making the claim.
You can also check with your insurer or insurance agent before you arrange treatment.
Questions patients ask about insurance panels and MediSave
Yes, you can message or call the clinic directly, without a referral letter.
Some insurers ask for a referral letter or a medical report to support a claim, so check with yours.
It is a letter from your insurer to the hospital that can waive the deposit you would otherwise pay before admission.
It does not mean your insurer has approved your claim, and his clinic can help you ask for one.
For varicose vein day surgery that is medically indicated, MediSave may help, and an Integrated Shield Plan may also cover it, subject to your plan and panel.
For other conditions, please ask at your consultation whether your plan applies.
Start with a question about your insurance or MediSave
If you are unsure whether your insurer or MediSave applies, message the clinic.
You can ask before you arrange anything.
Family members can also message on a patient's behalf.
