Vascular surgery for veins, arteries and slow-healing wounds

When treatment is recommended, it is usually a day procedure using minimally invasive methods. Some conditions need a scan first, and some need open surgery, such as a bypass.

Finding the faulty vein and closing it from inside

01 Duplex ultrasound scan This ultrasound scan of the leg veins shows which veins leak and which way the blood flows, so treatment can be planned. 02 Radiofrequency ablation A thin catheter closes the faulty vein from inside with controlled heat, as a day procedure under local anaesthetic. 03 Endovenous laser treatment A fine laser fibre closes the faulty vein from inside with heat, usually as a day procedure under local anaesthetic. 04 Vein glue treatment A medical adhesive seals the faulty vein shut without heat, so only a small amount of local anaesthetic is needed. 05 Sclerotherapy Injections of a solution close smaller varicose veins and spider veins.

06 Mini phlebectomy Bulging veins near the surface of the leg are removed through very small cuts, often alongside vein closure. 07 Stripping and ligation This open operation ties off and removes the faulty vein, and is usually kept for severe or returning varicose veins. 08 Compression stockings Medical-grade stockings, made to your leg measurements, help support blood flow for people with swollen ankles or heavy, aching legs. 09 Vein medication Medication can help manage symptoms of varicose veins, such as pain and swelling. 10 Recovery after varicose vein treatment After the minimally invasive vein treatments, patients usually walk straight away and go home the same day.

Arteries and wounds

01 Angioplasty and stenting A small balloon widens a narrowed or blocked artery from inside, and a stent may be placed to keep it open. 02 Bypass surgery This operation reroutes blood around a blocked leg artery, using a healthy blood vessel or a synthetic graft. 03 Wound debridement and advanced wound care Dead, damaged or infected tissue is removed from a wound that is not healing well, to help it heal. 04 Diabetic foot screening This check of the feet, their feeling and their blood flow looks for risks of foot ulcers in people with diabetes.

Inside the vessel or open surgery

Endovascular treatment, vascular surgery done from inside the blood vessel

In an endovascular treatment, the work is done from inside the blood vessel, through a thin tube called a catheter. Open surgery, such as a bypass, is done through cuts in the skin. Dr Ooi performs both.
